Pa and Coed Hills are excited to invite your school to experience the opportunity of
one of the finest workshops available. 
Pa – Modou Sowe is a master carver from the Gambia and is currently artist in residence
at Coed Hills Rural Artpsace.  He is offering a number of workshop options that include:

 

Community Totem Pole creation for school gardens

Explore themes and chose power animals that inspire students and that represent
the school.  The preliminary ideas and drawings will then be used to create a lasting
sculpture for the community.  Pupils will be introduced to carving techniques and methods.
Pa will work to meet Key Stage criteria.

Wood Carving Workshops

For individual school pupils to learn about timber properties, wood as a material and
basic skills for design craft and carving.

Traditional African Drumming -

As a ‘body meditation’ to quieten the mind and calm the body this music experience
will inspire all pupils.  Up to 20 students

Mask Making –

Chose an African Mask for – hunting, dancing, spiritual power for ceremony and festivals.
The designs are made from cardboard, wood stick, beads, ribbons and other craft
supplies.  Cultural stories accompany the making process.

Gambian Food-wise –

Discover and experience African cooking with hands on meal preparation, from
Jollof (rice dish) to Charie (Gambian desert).  This workshop delivers health and nutrition
information. 

Mali Empire History and Culture –

Storytelling and exhibition of Cultural Arts with strong emphasis on West African tribe
and traditions.  The class is divided into tribes, Fullani, Mandinga, Wollof, Serehulai,
Serer, Jola. With each one learning about the roles and the values of  their tribe within the
society.

 

The Workshops can be run at the school or alternatively the school can come to
Coed Hills Rural Artpsace where students can learn in the rural environment of a
sustainable living Community.
